The fourth season in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone starts today. The developers warned that the update will be very large, but it seems that the players were not ready anyway.
Twitter keeps track of trends — words and events that users write most often about in a short period of time. The phrase “84 GB” burst into the worldwide trending topics at the #2 spot. If you look at tweets with these words, they are devoted to the Call of Duty update.
Apparently, there was some mistake on Xbox One that caused the patch to bloat catastrophically. The same patch on PlayStation 4 was 32 gigabytes, and on PC 45 gigabytes. Activision technical support has already confirmed that the update file for Xbox One should have been much smaller.
However, even without mistakes, the situation turns out not very pleasant: the total size of Modern Warfare on PlayStation 4 to the fourth season was 190 gigabytes. To install a fresh patch requires a few dozen more gigabytes, but after that the game will “thicken” only 4 gigabytes. The PC requires 118 gigabytes for Warzone alone.
It should be noted that you don’t need to keep all of Modern Warfare on your hard drive: on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 you can remove pieces of the game that you don’t need — for example, a single campaign or a cooperative. However, on a PC this feature is not available.
