The PlayStation 5 was Sony’s biggest ever console launch according to the tech giant.
Speaking on the official PlayStation Twitter account, a Sony representative said that that the PS5 was the company’s “biggest console launch ever.” The message also thanked gamers for being so enthusiastic about the hardware, helping it to outperform both the PS2 and PS4.
However, Sony has not revealed exact figures for the number of units it has shipped to retailers or sold to customers. Fans will likely have to wait until Sony’s next financial results to get detailed numbers, although the company has said it expects the PS5 to outsell the PS4 in the first fiscal year. That would mean it needs to move more than 7.6 million units.
In the same Tweet, Sony went on to say that demand for the new console had been “unprecedented” but “more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year.” It suggests those looking to purchase a PS5 in the near future contact local retailers.
