As a means of escape, virtual reality (or VR) is a strong tool during these times. Simply placing yourself in a change of scenery, even a virtual one, can be extremely useful for dealing with cabin fever during the pandemic. However, this experience does come with a pretty hefty price tag.
Fortunately, the PlayStation VR offers a reasonably priced means of trying some of the incredible immersion that VR games have to offer. Although, it might be difficult to figure out which games are definitely worth checking out. As such, we will be taking a look at the most incredible PlayStation VR games that you should know about.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
Some games are simply easier to get completely lost in than others. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was definitely one of those games when it released in 2011. Naturally, repeated releases since then have taken away some of this charm. However, VR actually manages to recapture the magic.
Being placed directly into the snow-capped mountains of Skyrim is an incredible experience. While the visuals may look a little fuzzy, being able to explore the world so personally makes up for it in spades.
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard released in 2017 complete with VR support. It is unique in that it was developed with this addition in mind. This makes it one of the best VR experiences that you can find on the console at this time.
Taking on the role of a man named Ethan, players will explore a Southern home filled with dark secrets and horrors. It isn’t an exaggeration when people say that this is one of the more intense games players can take on in VR.
Honestly, taking the free demo for a spin before buying the game is recommended. That way players can make sure they can handle some of the things the game will throw at them before committing to a purchase.
Beat Saber
Rhythm games are fun, laser swords are cool, and VR makes many things just a little better. Toss all of those elements together and you get the 2018 game, Beat Saber! This game is addicting as well as energizing (and a bit exhausting).
Beat Saber is good for both burning some calories in quarantine and burning away some time when you have nothing else to do.
Astro Bot Rescue Mission
Platformers featuring adorable characters are always fun. However, experiencing a 3D platformer in VR is something that just has to be tried. Being placed in the middle of a stage while your tiny Astro Bot buddy runs around you is most certainly worth a big smile or two.
Plus, this game nails some of the notes that the 3D Super Mario games hit on Nintendo consoles. Of course, the VR aspect is strong here, as well. Some of the boss battles in VR are stunning and well worth any PSVR owner’s time.
Iron Man VR
Released in July, Iron Man VR allows players to take control of the iconic superhero. Anyone who has ever wanted to put on a fancy suit and fly around using Iron Man’s arsenal of weapons will be more than happy with this game.
It may not be the prettiest game ever made. However, the amount of fun to be had as the Marvel character is well worth at least trying the free demo!
Moss
This adorable action game was developed specifically for PlayStation VR. Playing as a cute mouse with a tiny sword, players will be placed in an enchanting fantasy setting. The game is similar to Astro Bot Rescue Mission in that it is a platformer. However, Moss is a tiny bit more action-oriented and much more fantastical.
The levels are incredible and the gameplay is nicely balanced between combat and environmental puzzles. Plus, being able to actually lean in a bit and examine a world like this is something that rarely fails to deliver.
Wipeout Omega Collection
This 2017 collection of futuristic racing games now has VR support. Sitting players in the pilot’s seat of their very own speeder, the VR support allows them to look around as they race. The game features some awesome sci-fi scenery and tracks almost hectic enough to rival the F-Zero series. Simply put, Wipeout Omega Collection should be on every arcade racing fan’s radar.
Superhot VR
Following the incredibly successful launch of Superhot on a variety of platforms, the game made a big jump when it transitioned to VR in 2017. The result of this big move is something that a person just has to try at least once.
Superhot VR is probably the closest that any of us will come to feeling like a character in The Matrix. By setting the player in a room filled with enemies, tons of weapons, and a unique advantage, Superhot makes for a power trip that few games can provide. That is, once you get a hang of how the game works, of course.
At the beginning of the level, time is frozen in place. This allows the player to scan the area in front of them and in their periphery while wearing their PSVR headset. Once they move, however, the enemies will begin approaching. They do stop once again as the player halts their own movement. However, there is still precious little room for error to work with sometimes. Players are tasked with forming a plan on the fly and reacting to the environment around them in real time. This makes for one of the coolest VR experiences to date.
Rez Infinite
On-rails shooters are perfect for a VR setting. However, an on-rails shooter that is very much catered to hypnotic visuals is something that honestly makes trying VR gameplay worth the price tag.
Rez is something of a cult classic that has bounced around from console to console since originally releasing on the Sega Dreamcast in 2001. It seems that it finally found a true home on the PSVR in 2017 with the release of Rez Infinite. The music, the gameplay, and the stunning visuals make for a game that is easy to both get lost in and even meditate with.
You will be shooting through the hectic levels the entire time. However, it is also very easy to just turn your brain off and take in the experience whenever you put your VR headset on.
