Monkey Island 2 Sequel Announced 31 Years Later

April 4, 2022

Thirty-one years after the release of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge comes news we are getting a proper sequel. Best of all, original game director Ron Gilbert has returned to shepherd this new title.

Gilbert dropped the news via Twitter today. Impressively, he said that the new game, entitled Return to Monkey Island, has been secretly under development for two years.

In addition to Gilbert, Dave Grossman is returning for this installment, the sixth in the series overall but the first to continue the story from the ending of 1991’s Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Grossman and Gilbert both wrote and designed the original games, so this sequel should look feel pretty familiar. It should sound familiar, too, with Dominic Armato returning to lend his voice once more to series protagonist Guybrush Threepwood.

So far, we don’t know much else about Return to Monkey Island besides the fact that it will come out sometime this year. Gilbert’s Terrible Toybox studio has partnered with Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital to bring this game to life. Considering the caliber of games these studios have been putting out, we have high hopes that their collective magic will help this sixth Monkey Island game shine.
