The Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most popular and successful in gaming. But with Grand Theft Auto V releasing in 2013, it has been some time since a new sequel launched. Of course, Rockstar has little incentive to rush out Grand Theft Auto 6, especially with the unprecedented success of Grand Theft Auto Online.
Yet, there will almost certainly be a sequel in the near future. The series is just too lucrative for Rockstar to not take advantage of its massive fanbase. Thankfully, there have been plenty of leaks and rumors about over the last few months. Whether all of them are genuine is, of course, up for debate. But if even a few of them turn out to be true, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be a game to get excited about.
Here are all the Grand Theft Auto 6 rumors going around.
When will Grand Theft Auto 6 release?
Players already know that the next-gen version of Grand Theft Auto V is not launching until 2021. That would seem to indicate that the sequel won’t be coming anytime soon. After all, the developer will not want to take any attention away from Grand Theft Auto V. That would back up rumors that the sequel might not release until 2022 or even 2023. While games like this take a long time to develop, fans will likely be unhappy if that date was confirmed. But with no official announcement or trailer for the game, it will likely be a few years before it launches.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has reportedly been in development for years
The general consensus among fans is that Grand Theft Auto 6 has only been in development for a short time. After all, Rockstar has been hard at work on Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 recently. But one rumor seems to indicate that the developer might have started on the project a long time ago. In fact, some leaked information indicates that Rockstar has been involved in active development since 2018. That means that pre-development work like concept art and storyboarding would have been completed long before that stage.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly be set in Vice City
Out of all the rumors about Grand Theft Auto 6, one has remained consistent for more than a year. Many now believe that the sixth game in the series will see a return to Vice City. Everybody from musicians to industry insiders have pointed to the game being set in the iconic location. The rumor could easily be authentic. Most Grand Theft Auto games revisit old areas, with the most recent going back to San Andreas. So it would make sense for Rockstar to go back to the Miami-inspired area for the next game.
Another rumor says lots of different locations will be included
Although the prevailing rumor about Grand Theft Auto 6 is that it will be set in Vice City, there are other options. A popular rumor that has made the rounds over the last few months argues there will not be one location. Instead, the action will take place across a variety of different cities and environments. This would make sense considering the power available in next-gen consoles. Rockstar could take advantage of the extra resources to create a huge in-game world. Exactly what locations would be included, though, is still unknown.
Some important characters might be returning
Ever since the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, there have been rumors about which characters might return in a sequel. The fifth game essentially had a brand new cast, with almost no characters from previous titles. But that could all change with the sixth installment if rumors are to be believed. Several have suggested that the likes of Tommy Vercetti and Niko Bellic could return in some capacity. In fact, a few rumors have even said that Vercetti will star as the main character once again. Other characters like CJ from San Andreas, might also make an appearance.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly support VR
Although VR might seem like a bit of a niche feature, more and more games are supporting virtual reality. In fact, there are lots of mainstream titles that now include some sort of VR functionality. The traditionally third-person Grand Theft Auto series might also not seem like a good fit. But Rockstar has already introduced first-person perspectives into Grand Theft Auto V. That might be why there are so many rumors about the sequel supporting VR. It just makes sense considering the advancements the studio has already made in other areas. Especially in terms of the new first-person mode.
Grand Theft Auto 6 might be a spin-off
Rockstar has never been afraid of going in unusual directions, even with the Grand Theft Auto series. The franchise already has a number of high-profile spin-offs and not every entry is numbered as a mainline game. Just look at the likes of Vice City and San Andreas for examples of that. So the rumor that Grand Theft Auto 6 might be some sort of spin-off rather than a full sequel has some credence. After all, it is something that Rockstar has done before and will likely do again.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly have a Red Dead Redemption 2 style weather system
Rumors on Reddit have stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 will take some technology from Red Dead Redemption 2. Most notably, the rumors argue that it will use a weather system similar to the one used in the Western action-adventure title. This will make the weather in the sequel far more dynamic, ensuring it is not as predictable as in Grand Theft Auto V. Other rumors suggest the new game might also incorporate a number of mechanics and features from Rockstar’s latest release.
