Missions are the main building block of every video game. It doesn’t matter whether you are playing a first-person shooter or an RPG, players have to complete them to progress.
Not every single quest or campaign level has to follow the standard formula either. Developers often use smaller missions or side quests to experiment with new gameplay ideas or mechanics. They might even introduce wacky story concepts outside of the main plot.
As a result, there are some very creepy missions in video games. Many of them are not even part of strange or scary titles. You might even think the designers just created disturbing quests as a way of freaking out users. If you’ve ever played any of these creepy missions, then no doubt they have haunted your dreams. Here are the seven creepiest missions in video game history.
A Fine Night For It – Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 has its fair share of bizarre and creepy missions. You can find vampires, mythical creatures, and a selection of strange characters. Worst among them in terms of being terrifying is the mission A Fine Night For It.
It features a cult of psychopathic killers known as the Night Folk. They are famous for gruesomely killing anyone they come across. What makes them so creepy is they only use melee weapons and bows, brutally and savagely ripping apart their victims.
Tranquility Lane – Fallout 3
Tranquility Lane is a quest in Fallout 3 that is part of the main story. It sees players enter a virtual reality simulated in a special piece of equipment in Vault 112. As the mission continues, you have to take part in a series of violent acts that become ever more outlandish and brutal.
At first, players just have to make a small child cry. However, eventually, they must decide whether to kill residents or terminate the simulation and release them from their hellish existence.
Overlord – Mass Effect 2
Overlord is the main quest line and story from the DLC of the same name for Mass Effect 2. In it, players must travel through a research base as they attempt to destroy a rogue A.I. As the plot unfolds it becomes clear that this is no ordinary A.I. In fact, it is a part-computer, part-human fusion.
After fighting against the A.I. it is revealed that the chief scientist in charge of the project used his own brother in the experiment. This poor victim is part of the machinery with tubes feeding into his body. Characters then choose whether to free him from this torment or allow the experimentation to continue.
Risk Assessment – Grand Theft Auto V
Risk Assessment is a mission in Grand Theft Auto V that is part of the appropriately named Strangers and Freaks series. Franklin Clinton finds a mysterious dog that can seemingly understand everything that he says. It then leads him to a skydiver who is trapped in a tree after crashing with his parachute.
When Franklin explains that he found him thanks to the efforts of his dog, the skydiver reveals he has no dog. Even creepier is the fact that the dog then disappears as if it was never there in the first place. No explanation is ever given for who and what the dog is.
Bottom Of The Well – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has its fair share of scary monsters and creepy encounters. Above all of them in terms of being truly weird is a quest that forces the player to go into the well below Kakariko Village. This area is very different from most of the other environments in the game. It is dark, grim, and features none of the color found in different areas.
Throughout the underground lair are torture devices and splashes of blood. But the most hideous thing inside is Dead Hand, a terrible boss monster. This creature looks completely disgusting, surrounded by disembodied and horrifying hands that grab the player if they get too close.
Missing Son – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Missing Son is a contract in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The player has to find the son of Odhen, who has been missing for several days. The small boy went into the woods and never returned.
Further along in the quest, the monster responsible for the disappearance is revealed to be a fiend. This hellish creature looks like a huge demonic deer. Killing it allows the player to discover that the child is dead, with informing the mournful father being the last objective.
The Taste Of Death – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
A quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Taste of Death involves a cannibalistic cult. The player can become involved with the demonic worshippers and must carry out a variety of tasks for them. The culmination of the plot has the protagonist lure an unsuspecting priest to the ghastly lair.
There, you choose to either sacrifice and eat the victim or set them free and turn on the cannibals present. Eating the flesh of the priest grants a special reward item that the player cannot obtain anywhere else.
