Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming Souls-like game scheduled for release sometime in 2023. While that may seem like a long time from now, you can watch the drop-dead gorgeous gameplay trailer for the game today.
The name of the game refers in part to the name of the protagonist, Sun Wukong. That name translates to “The Monkey King,” and in the trailer, you can see the king himself take on bevies of flying baddies. There are also battles against much larger foes that evolve some of the more intense battles from the Dark Souls franchise.
If you like action games, there seems to be a lot of variety in this new title. For one thing, we see Wukong wielding many different weapons that seem to play very differently. And the trailer also shows off some magical abilities (such as freezing enemies). It’s not yet clear whether such abilities are standard or a result of a specific character build.
This game is being developed on the Unreal Engine and will be coming out in 2023. So far, there is no word about specific platforms the game will be released on. A PC release is very likely, and we’d be very surprised if you couldn’t play this title in a couple of years on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X | S.
The wait for 2023 may seem very long, especially after you watch that killer trailer. But you don’t have to wait that long to learn more about the character. This Monkey King is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. That story has received numerous translations and adaptations and served as the inspiration for a more contemporary “Monkey King” — Goku from the Dragon Ball series!
