LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Gets New Trailer, Release Date

January 20, 2022

While the Star Wars franchise has been hit or miss lately, the LEGO Star Wars games have been entertaining fans since 2005. Now, the latest entry, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, has a new trailer and an official release date.

Development for this title began way back in 2017. Now, after half a decade of development, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is coming out on April 5. It will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC.

True to its title, The Skywalker Saga covers all nine of the films comprising the three Star Wars film trilogies. But you can choose which trilogy to dive into first, so you can work yourself up to watching a little Lego Poe Dameron communicate that “somehow, Palpatine returned.”

For the most part, the gameplay looks like it will be similar to previous Lego Star Wars offerings. That means you’ll be performing basic attacks and combos and using different characters to navigate a variety of colorful levels, complete with different puzzles and challenges. Audio will come from the movies, but veteran players will enjoy the Mumble Mode to replace character dialogue with those familiar old-school mumbles.

Previous games leaned heavily into your ability to unlock different characters. That mechanic is still in play as well as the ability to unlock new planets to explore. Traveling to these planets sometimes involves exciting space dogfights, and players who make it to their destination can choose to either continue the game’s narrative or pursue various side quests.

Ultimately, the game will have over 300 unlockable characters from all nine films. Collecting Kyber Crystals helps unlock these characters as well as various features and abilities. This lets you upgrade the different character classes, including Jedi, Dark Side, Hero, Villain, Scoundrel, Scavenger, Astromech Droid, Bounty Hunter, and Protocol Droid.

While the game won’t come out for some months, there are incentives to order early. For example, pre-ordering gives you early access to a Trooper Character Pack. If you don’t pre-order, though, you can snag this pack a month after the game launches, and the pack will be available alongside other offerings such as a Character Collection season pass that gives you access to seven different character packs.

Players excited for this game will have to make an important decision regarding which version to get. Getting the digital version means you can snag a Classic Obi-Wan Kenobi playable character that won’t be available anywhere else. But if you get the physical Deluxe Edition, it comes with an exclusive Star Wars LEGO figure: Luke Skywalker with Blue Milk.
