The initial success of the Sonic the Hedgehog game helped spawn a bevy of sequels and TV shows. Now, the movies are following suit, with Paramount confirming production of both a third Sonic movie and a TV show focusing on Knuckles.
Yes, we did say “third movie.” Even though the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie isn’t coming out until April 8, Paramount is investing heavily in this franchise. Towards this end, they have confirmed production on a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie for the big screen. Meanwhile, streaming service Paramount+ will be getting a Knuckles spinoff show for the small screen in 2023, with Idris Elba reprising his role as Knuckles the Echidna.
We’ll first see Knuckles in the sequel movie, and he’s not the only familiar character joining in on the fun. In the original trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we saw the character of Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessy). Balancing out the new characters is the return of Jim Carrey, whose Dr. Robotnik is plotting to steal the Chaos Emeralds with a bit of help from Knuckles.
In addition to the theatrical Sonic 2 movie, an animated series called Sonic Prime is set to debut on Netflix this year. It seems we’ll be getting our fill of Sonic on the big screen and small screen ahead of the next Sonic game, Sonic Frontiers, expected to arrive in late 2022.
