A recent trailer for The Last of Us Part II features a cover version of the 1987 song “True Faith” by the U.K. band New Order. Now, an American musician is claiming that the song is a replica of a cover version she released in 2011.
Lotte Kestner tweeted at Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog on Thursday, “hey are you aware that the true faith cover you put in your last of us 2 trailer is a replica of my cover that came out 10 yrs ago? I wrote original parts not in the original song that are copied exactly by whoever covered it. I am heartbroken.”
In a since-deleted tweet on Thursday, Kestner claimed “at 3:30 in my song in particular is the vocal part that i wrote which is featured in your trailer exactly.”
There was no such humming in the original version by New Order. However, what appears to be exactly the same vocal part can be heard in The Last of Us Part II trailer from the 45th second mark, but now it is performed by Ashley Johnson, Ellie’s voice actor.
You can compare “True Faith” in the trailer and Kestner’s version below.
And for bonus fun, here is New Order’s original 1987 version of “True Faith”:
At the time of writing, Sony and Naughty Dog have not commented. The Last of Us Part II will be out on June 19 for PlayStation 4.
