Stranger Things fans can look forward to seeing Season 4 of their favorite show when it returns to Netflix on May 27. But this super-sized season will come in two parts, with the second half of the season releasing on July 1.
This info comes straight from showrunners the Duffer Brothers, who revealed it via the official Netflix website. They explained that splitting the season into two parts is because of its ambitious size. “With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one.”
With the news that Season 4 will only have nine episodes and yet have a runtime nearly double that of previous seasons, each episode may be closer to the length of a feature film. That makes the show a little harder to binge and helps explain the decision to split the season into two parts.
The news about season 4 having a long runtime is good. But the Duffers also dropped some bittersweet news: “It’s also the beginning of the end.” They announced that the series will end with Season 5.
“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling towards our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.”
The official Netflix synopsis for Stranger Things Season 4 follows:
“It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”
