The Cowabunga Collection Brings Retro TMNT Games to Modern Consoles

March 10, 2022

Back in the ’80s and ’90s, there were many great Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games in arcades, on the NES, on the SNES, on Game Boy, and on the Genesis. And now, the greatest TMNT hits of yesterday are coming to modern consoles in the form of The Cowabunga Collection.

This collection comes to us courtesy of Konami and their collaboration with Digital Eclipse and current TMNT license holder Nickelodeon. And whether you’re a Turtles fan from way back or a more recent convert, this collection has a little something for everyone.

What do you get in The Cowabunga Collection? Here is the full list of games:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade)
  • TMNT: Turtles in Time (Arcade)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)
  • TMNT II: The Arcade Game (NES)
  • TMNT III: The Manhattan Project (NES)
  • TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (SNES)
  • TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist (Genesis)
  • TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan (Game Boy)
  • TMNT II: Back from the Sewers (Game Boy)
  • TMNT III: Radical Rescue (Game Boy)
  • TMNT: Tournament Fighters (NES)
  • TMNT: Tournament Fighters (SNES)
  • TMNT: Tournament Fighters (Genesis)

Despite these games being decades old, this collection brings new features players can look forward to. For example, there will be a special Challenge Mode and Boss Mode to go with the updated HD textures. And there will also be rewind and save state features which, along with the collection’s custom game guides, might finally help some of us TMNT fans beat that first NES game (damn you, swimming level!).

Best of all, you don’t have to play through some of these games alone. With local multiplayer, you can play with friends on the arcade games as well as the console versions of the arcade games and console-only titles like TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project and the Hyperstone Heist. Additionally, online multiplayer is available for TMNT 2: The Arcade Game, TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project, and TMNT 4: Turtles in Time.

We first heard about The Cowabunga Collection in Wednesday’s State of Play stream that verified this collection is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. However, it will also be coming to PC, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S sometime in 2022.

Which of these TMNT games are you most looking forward to playing? Let us know in the comments!
