Released on October 25, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a fresh start for the franchise, bringing several innovations to the fold. It all might be a bit overwhelming for players, this guide should be helpful so you know everything about the game.

There Are Three Different Special Versions

On top of the standard edition of the game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare also has three special versions available. The Operator Edition costs $79.99 and includes three operator packs. These include exclusive character and weapon skins along with extra bonus content.

There is also an Operator Enhanced Edition, which features the same content along with 3,000 Call of Duty points. Finally, the Precision Edition includes the operator packs, a controller skin, a steelbook case, and performance thumbsticks for your controller.

Nine Multiplayer Modes Are Included

Activision always ensures that the Call of Duty franchise has a strong multiplayer offering. Popular game modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Headquarters, and Search and Destroy all return.

Infinity Ward have also introduced a few new game modes. Ground War allows up to 64 players to battle against each other, while Cyber Attack is a new take on Search and Destroy. Meanwhile, Gunfight is a 2v2 playlist, where players only have one life and must eliminate the enemy team.

As you might suspect, there are also hardcore variants of these modes. These provide a more challenging experience, as you have less health and guns do more damage. Realism mode is an even more extreme extension of this where players have no HUD and can be killed with a single shot.

The Game Is A Soft Reboot Of The Original

Although the name might be confusing, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is not a remake of the original 2007 game called “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.” Neither is it a direct sequel to 2011’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Instead, the new title from Infinity Ward acts as a soft reboot of the Modern Warfare series. It tells a new story featuring characters that many fans will be familiar with. This includes a younger Captain Price, who is now voiced by Barry Sloane.

New Maps and DLC Will Be Free

In a dramatic shift in policy, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will not feature a Season Pass or paid DLC. This means that all players will be able to download post-launch maps and game modes when they release at no extra cost.

While this is a major change, it ensures that the player base does not fragment with new DLC. Microtransactions will be offered for sale instead, helping to fund the post-launch content. These will be cosmetic items only that will not affect gameplay.

It Features a Dark and Political Story

Over the last few years, Activision has focused more and more on multiplayer. The culmination of this was Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which did not even feature a single-player campaign. That is changing with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Infinity Ward has put a renewed focus on the campaign and story of the latest first-person shooter.

The developers have attempted to create a more realistic and darker campaign than ever before. Throughout the story, the line between good and bad blurs. The player is left to decide what is moral and what is not.

Highway of Death Has Caused Controversy

Infinity Ward and Activision are no strangers to controversy. The mission “No Russian” from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a famous example. It involved taking on the role of an undercover terrorist killing civilians at an airport. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has also proven to be controversial.

This is mostly due to one particular level in the campaign, “Highway of Death.” In the game, Russian forces kill innocent civilians fleeing on the road. However, the event seems to be based on the real-life “Highway of Death” in Kuwait where U.S. forces bombed retreating Iraqi soldiers during the first Gulf War. That the game switches the perpetrators to Russia has caused outrage from players in that region.

Cross-play Is Enabled

For the first time in the history of the franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will support cross-play. Players on all platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One can enter matches with each other through online multiplayer.

A variety of options are also available, allowing users to choose if they want to use cross-play or limit matchmaking to those using the same control method. The fact that Activision is offering map packs to everyone for free and releasing them on all platforms simultaneously also means that there should be no barriers to players matching up.

Spec Ops Mode Returns

The Spec Ops mode that was first introduced several installments ago has returned in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The co-operative mode introduces Operations, allowing players to complete them however they want.

There is no set approach to tackling an objective. Whether you go all guns blazing or choose to stealthily take out enemies, the choice is up to the player. It is also possible to use all the customization options from competitive multiplayer that users have unlocked.
