Animal Crossing: New Horizons Received ‘Game of the Year’ Award on Tokyo Game Show

September 28, 2020

Tokyo Game Show 2020 held its awards ceremony of the best games in recent months. Apparently, there was no usual year-to-year divisions: those projects that came out in the summer of 2019 were also included in the nominations.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has claimed the prestigious Game of the Year award. The organizers commented on their choice:

“Because we were forced to stay home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a slow-life experience in this game in which you can do everything freely became a comfort to people all over the world. Communication with close friends through the game and interaction with other players in events went beyond the bounds of a single game, and the game showed the power of entertainment from Japan, acquiring overwhelming support from many users of all ages, from children to senior citizens, in general voting, and won both the Award for Excellence and the Grand Award with unanimity.”

The list of winners of the Japan Game Awards 2020 looks like this:

  • Grand Award — Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Award of the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry — Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • Game Designers Award 2020 — Baba is You
  • Best Sales Award — Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield
