Independent developer GoodbyeWorld Games and publisher Skybound Games have announced Before Your Eyes, a narrative game with a very special feature. You control things by simply blinking your eyes!
What’s the game about? Your character travels with a Ferryman who must bring souls into the afterlife. Along the way, your character reflects on his own life, including the happiest and most tragic of experiences.
You play the game with the help of a webcam. Blinking in the right way and at the right times can help you control what your character sees and remembers. Otherwise, movement through the game is automatic, making this a little more akin to an interactive movie than a traditional video game.
The goal is for you and your character to “learn the ultimate truth” at the heart of the game. And it’s been at the heart of the developers’ lives for many years now. Game director and composer Oliver Lewin revealed, “We’ve been working on this game since college — for the better part of a decade — so it’s really the definition of a labor of love.”
And other devs are hopeful that the unconventional control system may change the way we design and play games. Game writer and creative director Graham Parkes said, “We really can’t wait to get this into the hands of players, so they can finally experience this completely new way of using tech to tell human stories. It’s really something you have to experience firsthand.”
We’ll find out if the game lives up to the hype very soon. Before Your Eyes will be available via Steam on April 8.
