The Last of Us Part II Is Already Setting Sales Records

June 22, 2020

As usual, last week’s UK retail sales reports are out quickly. The Last of Us Part II has already sets various sales records, according to GamesIndustry.biz.

Here are the UK boxed game records of The Last of Us Part II so far:

  • It is the fastest-selling release among all Sony games for PlayStation 4. The Last of Us sequel is 1% ahead of the previous record-breaker in this category, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. (Remember, this does not even take into account download sales.)
  • The Last of Us Part II’s launch sales are 76% higher than the first game’s. This is possibly due in part to the fact that PlayStation 4 is much more popular than PlayStation 3 was.
  • The Last of Us Part II is the biggest UK boxed game launch in 2020 so far. The previous record holder was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which had launch sales 40% smaller than The Last of Us Part II.

Retail circulation of The Last of Us Part II in the UK is now estimated at around 195,000 copies. According to Gamstat, Part II now has about 2.8 million players.

Sony reports on sales of its exclusives about two weeks after the release, so official news about The Last of Us Part II sales can be expected around July 3. According to @BenjiSales on Twitter, Ellie’s story has every chance to overtake God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man and become the most successful Sony exclusive for PlayStation 4 in terms of sales.
