‘WandaVision’ Spinoff Starring Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Is in Development at Disney+

October 7, 2021

It looks like we haven’t seen the last of Kathryn Hahn in the MCU.

The WandaVision actress, who stole the show as nosy next-door neighbor Agnes and was revealed to be powerful witch Agatha Harkness all along, is reportedly getting her own spinoff series from Marvel Studios at Disney+, according to Variety.

The series is described as a “dark comedy” and would star Hahn as Agatha, but no further plot details are known. When we last saw Agatha, she was trapped in the New Jersey suburb of Westview by a spell from Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. Jac Schaeffer, head writer of WandaVision, is set to write and executive produce the spinoff.

WandaVision, which ran for nine episodes from January–March on Disney+, was one of the breakout TV series of the year, receiving raves from fans and critics alike. It earned a staggering 23 Emmy nominations, including one for Hahn’s performance, and a win for the viral song “Agatha All Along.”

It makes sense that Marvel would want to capitalize on the success of WandaVision with a spinoff series from Schaeffer, since a second season is not on the table. Marvel honcho Kevin Feige apparently has other plans for Vision and Wanda, the latter of whom is confirmed to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness next year.

While an Agatha spinoff does not appear to have been part of the original plan, Feige has always been good about listening to which characters break out and giving fans more of what they want. (Hence, why Thor: The Dark World was reshot to let Loki survive after fans decried his death in test screenings.)

With the announcement of the WandaVision spinoff, Marvel Studios has at least 10 new TV series in the works for Disney+, in addition to second seasons of hit shows Loki and What If…?. These include Hawkeye, starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, slated for November, and four series coming in 2022: Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Secret Invasion starring Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos.

Other series reportedly in the works are Ironheart, Armor Wars starring Don Cheadle’s Rhodey, an untitled Wakanda series starring Danai Gurira’s Okoye, and a Hawkeye spinoff series called Echo.
