The 8 Biggest Games to Look Forward to in 2020

December 18, 2019

Although 2019 did not have that many blockbuster titles, next year looks to be a completely different story. With the latest PlayStation and Xbox consoles coming in 2020, it is certain to be a big year. After all, publishers and developers often want to release fan favorites with new hardware to take advantage of extra sales. There is also a collection of titles that have been in development for several years set to release over the coming months.

In some cases, the most highly-anticipated games are sequels in popular franchises. Whereas in other instances, the games are completely original properties from trusted studios. One thing we can be certain of is that 2020 will be a great year for gaming. Here are the biggest video game releases to look forward to in 2020.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII is widely regarded as the greatest entry in the acclaimed series. It should be no surprise then that fans have long requested a remake of it for modern hardware. Square Enix is finally doing just that in 2020 with a remaster of the PS1 classic. The studio is doing such a thorough job of rebuilding the entire game from the ground up that it will release in several parts. Launching only on PlayStation 4, the first part is due on March 3.

Doom Eternal

After successfully rebooting the Doom series in 2016, id Software is set to launch the sequel in 2020. Doom Eternal was originally planned to release in 2019 but was delayed to give the studio further development time. Players can expect it to follow the example set by its predecessor, capturing the spirit of the classic games. One notable new feature is a grapple-like attachment that will let players quickly travel vertically. Doom Eternal will now release on March 20 for most platforms. A Nintendo Switch version is set to follow sometime later.

Half-Life: Alyx

Fans have long been expecting another Half-Life game. But it seemed like Valve had abandoned the franchise and the story would never see a conclusion. Of course, things changed with the announcement of the VR exclusive Half-Life: Alyx. Although it doesn’t continue the story of Gordon Freeman it is the first entry in the series since 2007. Taking place before Half-Life 2, players control Alyx Vance fighting against the alien force known as the Combine. It should release on PC in March 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red has become one of the most well-known developers in recent years. This is in large part due to the success of The Witcher series. When they announced that they were working on a futuristic role-playing game, players got excited. Everything that the developer has shown about Cyberpunk 2077 has built up the anticipation even more. With a strong focus on player choice and a striking visual design, it is likely to be a huge hit. The RPG is launching on all major platforms on April 16.

The Last of Us: Part II

The Last of Us was one of the PlayStation 3’s biggest successes. Released in 2013, it garnered acclaim from critics and players alike. Ever since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating a sequel to conclude the story. Players will take on the role of an adult Ellie as she seeks to avenge her close friend. Familiar faces are also likely to make an appearance when the title launches on PlayStation 4. The Last of Us: Part II releases on May 29.

Skull & Bones

Following the strong praise Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag received for its naval combat, Ubisoft decided to create a dedicated ship-based game. Skull & Bones will see players become a pirate captain. The game should be a unique experience, as most naval combat games are set in modern times. The gameplay looks to be much the same as what was present in Black Flag, so it should be familiar to fans. However, Skull & Bones includes multiplayer options along with new types of ships. It is expected to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One sometime in 2020.

Halo Infinite

Halo might be Microsoft’s biggest first-party series but it has fallen on hard times in recent years. When Bungie split from the publisher, they handed development duties to the internal studio 343 Industries. Both Halo 4 and Halo 5 failed to live up to the high expectations of the franchise. That could all change with Halo Infinite, which is expected to release for Holiday 2020. Most exciting is the fact that the game will also be a launch title for the Xbox Series X.

Overwatch 2

Despite the fact that most similar games seem to release constant updates instead of new games, Overwatch is getting a sequel. It will essentially be the same game as the original. Of course, it will also come with new heroes, game modes, and maps for players to get to grips with. Moreover, Overwatch 2 introduces a PvE singleplayer mode to help expand the story of the series. Overwatch 2 is widely expected to arrive in 2020. Stay tuned for the latest news and developments.
