Top 10 Games That Are Rumored to Be in Production

May 7, 2020

It can be very difficult to know exactly which games are in development at any one time. While many studios announce their titles years in advance of release, others keep their projects a secret. In fact, it is not uncommon for publishers to suddenly reveal a title just a few weeks before its launch.

Of course, this means that it is impossible to fully understand what titles might come out in the near future. Thankfully, players don’t have to make do with no information whatsoever. There are always some leaks and rumors about upcoming titles to ensure gamers are not left completely in the dark. Here are the top 10 games that are rumored to be in development right now.

Knights of the Old Republic 3

While there have been plenty of great Star Wars games, arguably the best is Knights of the Old Republic. The RPG franchise took players to a completely unknown time in the Star Wars universe, thousands of years before the events of the main films. Making a reboot or sequel makes a lot of sense and this might be why there have been so many rumors about a possible release. EA has not had much success with the Star Wars license since Disney acquired the property. They also own BioWare, the developer that made the first Knights of the Old Republic game.

Crash Bandicoot

The Crash Bandicoot series looked to be dead before Activision released a remastered collection of the first three games in 2017. The success of that title also led to the release of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled in June 2019. Since then, the publisher has been quiet about the future of the franchise. Yet, there are constant rumors about a completely new game being in development. The popularity of the two remastered releases demonstrates there is an audience for them after all.

3D Mario Remasters

For some time now, there has been speculation that Nintendo could be working on high definition remasters of some of their biggest Mario games. 2020 would seem like the perfect time to release such a collection as it is the 35th anniversary of the series this year. Reports indicate that the company has plans for re-releasing several high profile games for the Switch. These include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Sunshine. However, there’s been no official confirmation or details on possible release dates.

Grand Theft Auto VI

Ever since the release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013, there have been rumors about the next title in the hit franchise. Yet, Rockstar has seemingly not been in a rush to release a sequel. That makes sense when you consider the continuing success of the title and the revenue its online component generates. Of course, it is almost a certainty that Rockstar will be working on a new Grand Theft Auto game, especially now that work on Red Dead Redemption 2 is complete.

Harry Potter RPG

Despite the huge success of the Harry Potter franchise, there have been very few games based on the series. That’s especially true in recent times, with only mobile games releasing. All that could be about to change, though, with persistent rumors that a Harry Potter RPG is in development. Very few details are known about the title. However, leaks in 2018 suggested it would feature character creation and extensive spellcasting abilities. Exactly when it might take place and what story it would follow are still unknown.

Splinter Cell

Once upon a time, Splinter Cell was one of Ubisoft’s biggest hits. But in recent times, the series has faced a downturn with games like Splinter Cell: Conviction (2010) failing to meet expectations. The series has been on hold since the release of Splinter Cell: Blacklist in 2013. However, with Ubisoft rebooting other Tom Clancy properties such as Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six, there is still hope. There have been many rumors that a new Splinter Cell could secretly be in the works. Perhaps it will be released for the next generation of consoles when they arrive later this year.

Fable IV

When Microsoft scrapped Fable Legends in 2016, most people expected there would be a new game announced to replace it. The last full title in the series launched in 2010 in the form of Fable III. Since then, fans have had to make do with remakes and smaller spin-offs rather than full sequels. That’s strange considering the success of the earlier titles. Especially when the Xbox brand could do with some more first-party exclusives. Most rumors seem to indicate that Forza developer Playground Games could be working on a fourth Fable game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Remake

Activision has had a lot of success in recent times by going back to its Call of Duty roots. The latest title in the series was a 2019 reboot of the original Modern Warfare. Meanwhile, remasters of those early games have also proved incredibly popular. This has led to rumors that the next full release could be another reboot. This time, though, it will reportedly be Treyarch’s Black Ops series that will be remade for modern times.

BioShock 4

BioShock proved to be one of the best new gaming franchises of the last generation. However, after three titles, the series came to a halt in 2013. To many people’s surprise, there has been no sequel in quite some time. Recent announcements from 2K Games have suggested a new BioShock game is in the works. But it is not clear whether this will be a sequel to BioShock: Infinite or a reboot of the series. After all, many current players have never experienced the franchise before.

Batman: Arkham Reboot

After the release of Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015, Rocksteady Studios stated that they were done with the comic franchise. Although the British developer may no longer be working on games featuring the Dark Knight, that doesn’t mean other Warner Bros. studios can’t. In fact, there are reports that WB Games Montréal may be working on a soft reboot of the franchise. This game would tie in with others to create a shared DC game universe, linking with other comic properties.
